Emailing Candidates Do This Before Hitting Send
Emailing Candidates Do This Before Hitting Send Emailing Candidates Do This Before Hitting Send The spunky 25-year old with wing-tipped glasses and vintage oxfords shows off the open, collaborative and clean workspace to the potential candidate. The reclaimed wood shelving and white-board coffee tables accent the exposed industrial ceiling. The message is We are proud of our eclectic company culture work hard, play hard.Well done, you have created a home away from home for any millennial. But before any candidate walks through the antique, charming front door, there are three ways to present your company culture before the office tour.A whopping70 percent of American workers are not engaged in their job. What a huge opportunity for you These workers are poachable and the right direct message can lure them to your company. Whether this is via a social network like LinkedIn or an schmelzglas, these short messages, when done tactfully, can leave an impactful stamp on the candidate.1. Use a catchy, pop-out subject lineWhat first impression do you want the candidate to take away from your email? The subject line is the first thing the candidate reads and thereby makes the anfangsbuchstabe judgment. With 35 percent of email recipients opening email based on the subject line alone, this collection of words can make a significant impact, positively or negatively, to the candidate.Instead of the boring, run-of-the-mill subject line i.e. Entry-Level Sales Position, Great Pay, Great Benefits why not use something that will certainly stick out in the crowded inbox? Here are a few examples that any millennial would jump to open60k, Jeans and Free Lunch at Company XYZYoure Fun and I Want You On My TeamFlex hours and the chance to perfect your top spinKeep the subject line rolleal and thoughtful. This is the first glimpse into your company and should reflect your values and company personality. The goal is to grab attention and transcend your brand. Dont be afraid to have a l ittle fun2. Drop the cookie-cutter descriptionNow that the email is opened, we step on down to the message content. Six lines of the companys mission statement plus a regurgitated job description with vanilla words and vague details equals a glazed over email Use conversational words and phrases to sound like the human you are instead of a machine. The four-paragraph in-depth KPI report can be used later, after the initial interest has spiked.Threeout of four millennials say that work-life balancedrivestheir career choices. If you are proud of something specific about your culture, share it Opening the doors (metaphorically) of your company culture will speed up the process of finding the right fit of the next employee before opening the literal doors.Cut the buzzwords and keep it real. Each candidate does not want to think they are receiving a blast from a database or a purchased list. The point of this direct message is to get them towantto visit the career landing page and reply t o you to learn more.3. Personalize your email signatureThe last way to add that extra punch in the email is the email signature in the footer. This area continues to be overlooked.Just a little over50 percent of professionals use email signatures when they write their emails. What a missed opportunityUse creativity, colors, social links, a tagline, a quote, a pictureanything Add a call to subscribe to the unicorn of newsletters or a super-cool blog. Even a little personality goes a long way.The email signature is your chance to have the last word and leave your stamp to the message. Theconclusion the candidate forms after reading the message could be Wow, that person seems to have a great work-life balance Gee, gosh golly, I would love to work thereSo, what have we accomplished here? The candidate has taken a virtual tour of your company culture through a five-minute, 100ish word email. The subject line hooked the person the job description got him or her excited and the cool email signature poised the candidates hovering hand to hit reply. My Challenge to YouBefore you send a candidate an email, really think about what you are saying, what subject line you use and how you sign the message. These three areas could make all the difference in landing your dream employee.

Judgment - Your Resumes Secret Sauce
Judgment - Your Resumes Secret SauceJudgment - Your Resumes Secret SauceJudgment Your Resumes Secret SauceMaking tabloids and mainstream news a few years ago, a group of Japanese tourists boneheadedly elevated the wisdom of their in-car GPS above their own and followed its directions right into the Pacific Ocean. They ultimately emerged unscathed, but their rented Hyundai and their pride will remain forever waterlogged. Judgment is what they lacked read more to find out how highlighting this critical core competency can be the secret sauce to an effective federal resume. The widely circulated car-dunkingstory highlighted the over reliance on technology and the widespread ceding of judgment to devices and systems. The event took place in 2012before Siri, Uber, or the rapid rise of autonomous cars.Hopefully any similar future headlines will be as benign and chuckleworthy as the Japanese in AustraliaSet Yourself Apart With Your JudgmentThe anecdote here is apt to the job search and f ederal employment. The tourists were incompetent vacationers. To rise above the rest and land your next federal job, you must highlight core competencies.Professional judgment is the secret sauce to many federal positions especially mid and senior level jobs in many popular occupational series. It can sometimes be difficult for hiring managers to articulate the competency they seek in the frequently-bland, overly standardized language of job announcements. But like other things that are hard to pin down, they know it when they see it.On the flip side, it can be equally difficult for you, the applicant, to effectively communicate the judgment experience and related core competencies you possess. With the tenacity and speed with which the federal government automates and integrates judgment-robbing systems, the competency is a rarer quality these days. The various systems of the federal government today are analogous to GPS and Siriefficient for plugged-in folks to leverage but also crutche s which do not, in and of themselves, demonstrate personal usefulness, discretion, or judgment. The masses know Siri. And WAWF.And DAI.And a host of other specialized streamlining systems for work or play. What can set you apartand mean the difference between job offer and no job offeris that nebulous concept of occupational judgment.Including the Secret SauceYoure confident you have it.Youre reasonably sure your next employer values it.Yet you swim in a sea of systems and processes, of which you have experience with. How do you clearly and effectively pitch your higher-level judgment? Here are some ways to include the secret sauce in your resume. The Outline FormatJudgment cannot be communicated in even the best-written bullet point. To show your occupational judgment on paper, The Resume Places Outline Format is key. With tight, punchy paragraphs highlighting key skills, you will be much more effective at detailing hard skills required by the job alongside the competency of workplace jud gment. The former will get your resume through objective HR scorers scanning your resume for basic qualifications the latter will move you to the top of the hiring managers stack.He/she is searching for qualified candidates, but also competence, prudence, and good judgment. The CCAR MethodBecause instances of judgment usually need explanatory context, a Key Accomplishments section can be a great place to elaborate on your good workplace judgment. The Resume Place recommends and uses (in its professionally prepared resumes) the CCAR method for developing effective Key Accomplishment stories for inclusion in your resume.More info for can be found here.It is a great way to get your competency described and considered by your next boss.Consultations, Skill Matching, and TargetingOf course a large part of an effective federal resume involves clear beweis of your hard skills and experience with important enterprise systems. But an effective portrayal of the more elusive soft skill/competency of judgment can give you a critical edge.In crafting your federal resume, you must use your experience and judgment to most effectively portray it on paper.Theres an ocean of not-referred, less-than-qualified applicants out theredont steer yourself into it For more information and to contact us for assistance, go here resume-place.com/federalresumequote/ About the AuthorJeremy Mottis an experienced technical writer with significant analytical and organizational expertise, ideally suited for federal resume writing. Top 10 Job Scam Warning Signs
Top 10 Job Scam Warning SignsTop 10 Job Scam Warning SignsHave you ever wondered if a job is real or a scam? Sometimes, it can be hard to tell the difference. Here are some tip-offs to help you identify fake job offers and avoid job scams. Internet fraud is rampant, and scammers prey on job seekers. Your best defense is to do your research and report internet job scams. Review these tips, so you can identify and avoid a variety of different types of scams designed to get your personal infassonation and your money. Top 10 Internet Job Scam Warning Signs Too Good to be True Good jobs are hard to find. Like your mom always said, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Here are some tip-offs that the job is fake. You didnt contact them they contacted you They say that they found your resume online. They either offer you a job right away or say they want to bewerbungsbewerbungsgesprch you. Sometimes the scammers will try to entice you by saying that you made the cu t and they are interviewing the finalists for the job.The pay is great Here are two examples Healthcare Admin Assistant This is a work from home job. Work hours is from 9am-4pm Monday-Friday You will earn $45 per hour for this position, you are also expected online at Yahoo Messenger during working hours. We also offer flexible hours.... Heres a elende from a reader about anOperations Officer scam I have never had anyone offer me a job working 20 hours a week, for $72,800 annually, without an interview or two or three. They dont really say what you will be doing or where...The company address is in Spain. You get the job right away. After a quick phone or Instant Message interview, the interviewer immediately contacts you to offer you the job.Tip Scammers troll job boards looking for victims. To reduce the chance, youll get scammed, use job sites that have privacy policies and only allow verified employers to view the listings. Vague Job Requirements and Job Description Scammers try to make their emails sound believable by listing job requirements. Usually, these requirements are so ridiculously simple that almost everyone qualifies Must be 18 years old, Must be a citizen, Must have access to the internet. (You wouldnt be reading their email if you didnt have internet access, right?) The job requirements dont mention years of education or experience. As a rule of thumb, if its a real job, the requirements will be quite specific. Job scam emails usually dont include clear job descriptions, either. Many job seekers say that when they ask fora job descriptionor list of job duties, they get the brush-off. The interviewer either ignores the questions or says something like Dont worry, well train you. Unprofessional Emails Some emails from scammers are well-written, but many arent. Real companies hire professionals who can write well. If the email contains spelling, capitalization, punctuation or grammatical mistakes, be on your guard. Heres an example submi tted by a reader The menschengerecht resources have just reviewed your resume due to the one you posted on www.allstarjobs.com.You are now scheduled for an interview with the hiring manager of the company. Her anthroponym is Mrs. Ann Jernigan you are required to set up a yahoo mail account(mail.yahoo.com) and a yahoo instant messenger. In this example, the mistakes include Capitalization errors Human resources should be Human Resources, and yahoo should be YahooPunctuation errors Commas, periods, and parentheses should be followed by a spaceGrammatical errors Human resources have reviewed should be Human Resources has reviewed... Online Interviews via Messaging Services Many attempted scams say that the interview will take place online using an instant messaging service. The scammers often include instructions for setting up and contacting the hiring manager and may ask for confidential information. Tip If youre applying for an online job and youre told that the interview wil l take place online via instant message, research the company and its representatives before you agree to an interview. And if you agree to be interviewed, ask detailed questions about the job during the interview. Dont give out confidential information such as your bank account, credit card or Social Security numbers. Dont be fooled just because the interview questions sound real. Emails Dont Include Contact Information If the email doesnt include the companys address and phone, its a good bet that its a scam. And its a good bet that its a scam if the interviewer makes an excuse for using a personal email address by saying the companys servers are down, or the company is experiencing too many problems with spam,or the company hasnt yet set up its email system. Some scam emails will look like they come from real companies. One reader reported that The scammers email address was jobssenergy-world.com. The real company email is jobssenergyworld.com Tip Look at the email address c arefully, then copy/paste it into the search box. You can also type in the word scam after the email address to see if someone else has reported the company. Search Results Dont Add Up? Before agreeing to an interview, do your research. If its a real company, you should be able to find information about the company by doing an online search. Finding information does not guarantee that the company is legit, but if you cant find anything, you can bet its a scam. One reader got a scam job offer from Fijax.com Firstly their email is very unprofessional there is no signature at the end. When I checked for the company on Google, I found nothing, not even a website Some scammers pretend to represent real companies. One of our readers reported that she received a job offer from Proctor and Gambel, but the real company is named Procter Gamble. Another reader says that he was offered a job by someone who claimed to represent Gloprofessionals, but when he did his research, he found out it was a scam ALWAYS contact the REAL company or business and ask if this employee exists, that is how I found out this employee was a fraud. Tip Sophisticated scammers sometimes set up nice-looking websites but looks can be deceiving. Try this go to the Domain White Pages and type the companys web address into the domain or IP address box and click the go button. The results will tell you the date when the website was created. If the website is less than a year old, be on your guard.Tip When searching for information about the company, search for both the companys name and the email address. Also, copy/paste paragraphs from the email into the search box. Scammers may change the company name but re-use the other parts of the email, and its possible youll find an identical email posted online. Youre Asked to Provide Confidential Information? Some scammers ask for your bank account information to set up direct deposit or transfer money to your account, or ask you to open a new ban k account and provide the information to them Other scammers will tell you to go to a website and fill out a credit report form or provide confidential information so they can put you on the company insurance. Identity theft scams try to get you to provide your Social Security number and birth date and other personal information. Tip Before entering personal information online, check to make sure the website is secure by looking at the web address bar. The address should be https// not http// Sending Money or Valuables, Using Your Personal Bank Account Some of my readers tell me that theyve received checks that look like real cashiers checks. They are instructed to deposit the check, keep some of the money for themselves and send the rest of the money to someone else via Western Union or Money Gram. Then, a few days or weeks later, they get a call from the bank saying the check is fake. They have lost the money they sent. Heres an example from a reader Once you receive the check , First of all, I want you to head right away to your bank and get the check cashed. Deduct your first-week pay which is $500, and Deduct extra $100 for the Money Gram sending fee and proceed to the nearest Money Gram outlet around you to make payment to my wife travel agent. Some scammers ask to use your personal bank account to transfer money from one account to another account. It is called money laundering, and its against the law. Other scams ask you to receive and forward packages from your home. These packages might contain stolen goods or illegal substances. They Want You to Pay for Something? Legitimate companies dont ask for money. If youre told that you need to purchase software or pay for services, beware. Here are three examples. Buy this software They were offering $15 hr for training and $24.75 to start. I was so excited to work from home and actually be paid a decent wage. The interview went well, and I was told I have the job. YAY Then I was told that they were going to send me a brand new HP laptop for work, but I needed to pay for the software for it. I thought not a problem Ive had to upgrade in the past for jobs. Well here is the RED FLAG We need you to send $312 Western Union for software costs...Pay for a credit report The job will require you to work in a high financial environment, so it is our corporate policy that we perform financial verification check on all employees to ensure applicant registration info. Its corporate policy that we have applicants sent through our link, so we are compliant with the U.S employment standards act... Fill out the form and indicate that you want the free report. Heres what a reader had to say about this scam ...These companies are using the internet to first get a job seeking people to use their site and then be told they need a credit check to apply for a job thru their site, then that company charges an unauthorized fee on your credit card which you used to pay a $1.00 and one time fee for the credit check. Preying on those who can least afford it Shame on you Pay to have your resume reviewed You have a lot of strong, relevant experience and are an excellent candidate although it would be best to improve your resume before doing anything with it. I can refer you to a resume writing expert that can improve your resume to the standard we are looking for, and I believe he charges around $150 or so... Your Gut Says Its a Scam? Researching the company is your best defense, but some scammers are very clever. If you start to feel that things arent right, trust your intuition. Ask questions and pay close attention to the answers. Slow the process down and dont be pressured into making a commitment or giving out personal information. Do more research. If it turns out to be a scam, report it to the authorities.

8 Errors You Must Stop Making in Your Job Search
8 Errors You Must Stop Making in Your Job Search8 Errors You Must Stop Making in Your Job SearchEvery job searcher faces different challenges, but hiring managers see some of the same mistakes over and over again. Chances are good that if youre looking for a job, youre making some of these errors and you might have an easier search if you resolve to change your ways. Here are eight job-search missteps to put an end to today.1. Trying to read into every word or action from your einstellungsgesprcher. Because job searching can be so stressful, many job seekers try to find clues about their chances in everything an employer says and does. This leads to frustrating and generally fruitless attempts to parse every word from an interviewer Was she signaling I didnt get the job when she said they had more candidates to interview? Is it a good sign that he shook my hand and said hed be in touch? More often than not, these signals dont mean anything at all, and just drive candidates crazy try ing to read between the lines.2. Stressing out over elements of your job applications that really dont matter. Employers really dont care whether you spend time tracking down the hiring managers name or just address your titelblatt letter to dear hiring manager, so dont put time into that. Similarly, most hiring managers really dont care what your rsum entwurf looks like as long as its organized and easy to skim, or whether your post-interview thank-you note is handwritten or emailed. Dont sweat the little stuff put your energy into showing your qualifications and why youd excel at the job.3. Scrimping on the cover letter. If youre applying for jobs without including a compelling cover letter, one thats customized to this specific job, youre missing out on one of the most effective ways to get a hiring managers attention. A cover letter is your opportunity to make a compelling case for yourself as a candidate, totally aside from whats in your rsum. Youre doing yourself a disservice if you dont write one tailored to each job for which you apply.4. Thinking that you have the job before you have an offer. Too often, candidates see good signs from an employer and think it means that theyre going to get an offer only to be crushed when the offer never comes. And not only does this regularly lead to disappointment, it can also lead you to make bad decisions for yourself like not continuing to apply for other jobs or even turning down interviews because you think your search is over. Never assume that youre getting the job until you have a formal offer.5. Not explaining why youd excel at the job. If youre simply submitting a rsum that runs down where youve worked and what your job duties were, its no wonder if youre not getting interviews. Hiring managers arent nearly as concerned about what jobs youve held as they are about what you accomplished in those jobs. Your rsum needs to list specific accomplishments (like increased Web traffic by 25 percent over 12 months or regularly recognized for highest number of customer compliments), and your cover letter needs to explicitly address how your track record shows that youd excel if hired.6. Taking advice from people with no experience hiring. Theres tons of advice on job searching out there from your friends, your relatives and plenty of self-styled experts on the Internet much of it contradictory. Before you take any job searching advice, think critically about the source. Is it someone with significant experience hiring people? And recent experience, at that? If not, that advice might not be worth much.7. Taking it personally. Its easy to become personally invested in a job you think you really want and then be devastated when you end up not getting it. Many job seekers start to question whats wrong with them and what they were lacking but most of the time, these decisions arent personal at all. Often candidates get rejected not because they werent well qualified but because someone else was simply a better fit. When theres one open slot and multiple qualified candidates, lots of great people will get rejected. You cant take it personally.8. Forgetting to evaluate potential employers just as much as theyre evaluating you. In the anxiety of an interview, it can be easy to focus only on whether youre impressing your interviewer, but its crucial to remember that you should be thinking about whether you even want the job. The interview process isnt one-way you should use the time to think about whether youre the right fit for the work, the manager and the workplace culture. Otherwise, you can end up in a job where you dont excel or arent happy. So interview that employer right back before you make any decisions.Alison Green writes the popular Ask a Manager blog, where she dispenses advice on career, job search, and management issues. Shes also the co-author of Managing to Change the World The Nonprofit Managers Guide to Getting Results, and former chief of staff of a succe ssful nonprofit organization, where she oversaw day-to-day staff management, hiring, firing, and employee development.
